On Tuesday at 6:50 o'clock occurred the death of Elder John Reese Schleppy at his home on south Green Street, after a long illness with typhoid fever. The funeral services occurred on Thursday morning at 10 o'clock conducted by Rev. JH Oliphant. The interment took place in the Oak Hill Cemetery. Mr. Schleppy was born Dec 12, 1826 in Franklin County, this state and came to this county with his parents in 1832. They settled on the old Schleppy homestead, 3 miles south of this city and there Mr. Schleppy lived until March 1872 when he came to Crawfordsville where he resided until the time of his death. On June 7, 1849 he was married to Ruth E. Hart, seven children being born to them, four of whom still live, namely: Charles W. Schleppy, of this city, Mrs. Dora Jackman of Louisville, Neb; Mrs. Kate Pipher of Clay City and John H. Schleppy of Columbus, Ind. Mr. Schleppy was a carpenter by trade and was engaged in that business a considerable portion of his life. He was also a preacher and gave religious instruction from the standpoint of the Old School Baptist denomination. Few men had a wider acquaintance in this section than Elder Schleppy and he had many friends who will be pained to learn of his death. - kbz
